Jerry and Carol Bryan
He became the first in his family for many generations to go into politics. Becoming first, superintendent of schools, lawyer, circuit judge ; and senator. In 1852, Silas married Mariah Elizabeth Jennings.
. The Bryans were Irish, and the first of the family to this country is said to have been a William Bryan who came to Gloucester County about 1650. He was father of 11 sons and several daughters. Pne of his grandsons, reportedly by the name of Joseph and also known, as Josiah, settled near Winchester in 1710.
Culpeper County was formed in 1749 out of Orange County and by the mid 1700s we see the first recorded evidence of the Bryans there.
John Bryan’s father was William Bryan who died in 1806. William had married <$rca 1770, Letty Asher a daughter of John Asher. Aside . from John, the other children were, viz: James Bryan who .married Lottie Kennard; Lucy Bryan who married John Dunaway; Aquilla Bryan who married twice; Elizabeth Bryan who married James Baldwin (a.k.a. Baldick) in 1813; and William Bryan Jr.
