extension office in 1980, Ruby devoted herself to her first love, the preservation of the heritage of Rappahannock. A lifetime of collecting anything and everything that was a part of Rappahannock history was threatening to crowd Ruby and her family out of their house.
The idea of ceasing her collecting never crossed her mind, so, instead, beginning in the 1970s Ruby set about to transform the one-story remainder of the old Clark Tavern, owned by her family and just across the street from the Jenkins house, into First Washington’s Museum. A second transformation was beginning, as well, that of this private lady to our only home-grown national celebrity.
