Elementary students from Rappahannock, Greene, Page and Frederick Counties and the cities of Harrisonburg, Woodstock and Mt. Jackson were winners in WVPT’s ^Reading Rainbow” young Writers and illustrators contest.
An awards reception to recognize the local winners was held at the WVPT studios in Harrisonburg, Thursday, ^4ay 4 at 4 p.m. ' Students in grades kindergarten through third in the WVPT viewing area entered WVPTs local portion of the fcnnual, national PBS sponsored competition designed to encourage children to write and illustrate their own stories. To enter, each child submitted an original story with ht least five original illustrations. The stories could be real, imagined, fantastic, whimsical or humorous.
Winners from Rappahannock County Elementary School were:
Kindergarten: first place, Joseph Switzer, “Joseph’s Smet.”
Second grade: first place, Taylor Light, “The Fight of the Century.”
Second grade: second place, Rachel Switzer, “Talking Turtle.”
Third grade: first place, Emily Carter, “Water No More.”
Honorable mention: Caroline Massie, “Rappahannock’s Magical Environment.”
