• Congratulations to the RCHS students in Ms. Melissa Delcour and Ms. Suzanne Rossin’s English and Journalism classes for their recent VHSL Creative Writing Contest success! Six essays, short stories and poems (two each category) were selected from the works of students in English 9 and 10 classes and Journalism class.
The works were published in booklet form for submission to the Virginia High School League for consideration. The RCHS entry won a superior rating over all! Only four Single A schools in the state received this rating. We are very proud of our students’ success.
The students whose work was submitted are: Amber Allen, Daniel Landrum (Essays), Lea Pyne, Kori Alexander (Short Stories), and Summer Alexander, and Allyson Dodson (Poetry). Summer Alexander received individual recognition for her poem “Fields of Wheat and Stone”, winning a second place for her entry. She will receive a medal from the Virginia High School League for her special work.
Ms. Delcour and Ms. Rossin are to be commended for the special work that they do, and for taking the initiative to get their students to participate in this activity, especially in light of the fact that we do not have a Creative Writing Class offering at RCHS this year. We are very proud of these outstanding results!
• The RCHS Girls’ Soccer game last Tuesday was exciting. Playing Brentsville, the only team that has defeated our girls this year, they held their opponents 0-0 until the end, including two five minute over-times! They played extremely well defensively. The Varsity Baseball team apd the Boys’ Soccer team won their games with Brentsville as well. If you have not had a chance to see our teams play, you still have time before the end of the season.
• At the School Board meeting last week, three RCHS Technology students were on hand with their teacher, Mr. Ron Vickers, to share the project that won them a third place slot in the State TSA Competition. The Technology Students of America competition required problem solving strategies which utilized computer technology and mechanical know how. Each team was given a problem which involved performing a task (filling a container, moving it and sealing it); the problem had to be solved creatively following very precise guidelines. Our team incorporated the use of Legos, electric eyes and hydraulics into their solution. The talented students who brought home this honor are: Ian Blubaugh, Marshall Gangel and Matt Wolfe.
• The Prom and After Prom Party were tremendously successful this year, thanks to the efforts of many volunteers and staff members. Many thanks to all of you who donated door prizes, cash or services to make these events so special.
