The songs of the 1860’s that accompanied Confederate and Union soldiers to war will be played again during Sperryville Civil War Days, which will feature several different musicians.
The events of Saturday and Sunday, June 3 and 4, will include musical performances featuring old songs of the Civil War years as well as some newly composed music relating to the War Between the States. The performers will include an old fashioned minstrel group, a singer songwriter playing his own compositions, and a banjo playing historian and doctor from Winchester.
Jed Marum, based in Dallas, Texas, is a folk singer and songwriter who has taken up an interest in the Civil War and composed some new songs on that theme. One of them, titled “The Fighting Tigers of Ireland,” was inspired by the book written by Rappahannock author James P. Gannon. After Marum read Gannon’s “Irish Rebels, Confederate Tigers,” about a Louisiana regiment composed mostly of Irish immigrants from New Orleans, he composed a musical tribute to the men of the 6th Louisiana Infantry, who fought here in Virginia.
