The cost of foster care is quite small compared to a $100,000 residential placement, or $36,500 for a juvenile detention center or $20,000 plus for one year in a correctional facility. It just makes good economic sense to keep our children and youth close and implant the values and beliefs so cherished in the Rappahannock County community.

The Rappahannock County Department of Social Services encourages parents/families to consider becoming a foster parent/family. We can offer approved foster families with the necessary supports, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to help make a difference in a child’s or youth’s life. All medical, dental and other associated costs for a foster child are provided at no cost to the foster family. A clothing allowance is also provided for the child/youth.

Foster care for any child/youth is considered temporary, the primary goal being to eventually reunite child/youth with their family. So, almost from the moment you decide to bring a child/youth into your home, a transition preparation to return home or other permanent placement, begins for the child/youth. Transitional planning involves team work to bring forth an outcome tailored to meet the child’s needs.

Chances are no one will remember what foster parents did, except for:

• A child, now an adult, who has a life with a little more purpose and a lot more love.

• A child who would never have experienced an alternate “safe family” except that you chose to be a foster parent.

• Who has a job and pays the bills, because you taught them how to work.

• Who completed school, because you ensured that the homework was done.

• Who treats their family with respect, because you modeled dignity.
