salary raised at the April meeting. “The salary is not justified,” he said. “Computer work is done by Kaye (Town Clerk Kaye Kohler)—the Treasurer is not doing any more work than any other volunteer.”
Mrs. Viguerie responded to the charge by noting that “I do every bit as much work—perhaps even more— than the previous Treasurer. You don’t know what I do.”
Mr. Tompkins added that “the presumption working on the Board—is volunteering. There’s never been a presumption of it being a paid position.”
Town Attorney John Bennett noted that his initial reaction was that the salary could not be reduced but, on further investigation found that the position was unpaid at the time of the last election, and therefore it could be changed at the discretion of the Town Council. Council member Lynch asked if there were a list of the duties of the Treasurer, and received a negative reply. Mr. Tompkins said that the “Council should have it clear what the duties are, and that the money is at its discretion.” The budget will be debated and voted upon at the next meeting of the Washington Town Council. Treasurer Viguerie presented the Town’s financial report, noting consolidated assets of $453,899.20, up some $5,000 from that reported in April, and Water Works current assets of $7142.04, compared to the 3/31/00 figure of $11,803.68.
