A quiet mid-summer's day Board of Supervisors meeting was only slightly enlivened by public comments on the issues of dumpster closings and bears. Mary Ann Keefer lashed out at the Board for having closed the Huntly dumpster site in lieu of finding a more acceptable solution to the problem of dumpster site cleanliness.
She said that the 30 mile round trip to the new Flatwoods Refuse and Recycling Center was "unacceptable" and she asked, "What do you intend to do with this?" Ms. Keefer also chastised the Board for showing "blatant disregard" for working people by scheduling the Board meetings at 2 p.m.
Franklin Warner also addressed the dumpster closings by noting that he had "extraordinarily mixed emotions" on the Scrabble site closing. He said that the site "was often a mess" but that it was quite convenient. He added that "several years ago they talked about the pigs in Scrabble. Now it's clean. . . .There are no pigs any more."
The Board did not directly respond to these comments, but later discussed comments that they had received on the Flatwoods facility and related issues. County Administrator John McCarthy said that he had received requests for the earlier opening of Flatwoods, and recommended that the center open at 7 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, _ Mr, Warner suggested that the extended hours be during two weekdays, and the Board decided upon Wednesday and Thursday hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., but this schedule is subject to the availability of center attendants, and a final decision will be made shortly.
