Once you understand how he came to bejailed for three consecutive life sentences it iseasy to understand Carter's anger at the total, injustice of his life. While in prison he writes a book, found during a used book sale by a young black man (Lezra) in Canada, who ends up. being instrumental in his release after a long,( uphill battle.
Liev Schreiber is excellent as one of the men who works with Lezra for Carter's release. Rod. Stieger is great as the gruff but fair minded judge who hears Carter's last plea for release. The movie is powerful and absorbing, no won-J. der Denzel Washington received the "best actor” academy award nomination for his role. Herb and Naomi both applaud the film and ita actors! Bunches of thumbs up. ;
• Dogma: Rated R 130 minutes, 1999, starring Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Chris Rock^ Alan Rickman, Salma Hayek, Linda Fiorintino* with some excellent cameos by other actors,including comedian George Carlin as a quirky, cardinal. A deeply strange film in which tw«f angels (Damon and Affleck) who have beenbooted out of heaven, discover a way to be for-, given of their sins and reenter heaven. Except that, if they do so, mankind is doomed, or something like that.
Anyway, it's a really far out film, quite violent actually, with lots of bad language but some interesting intellectual discussions of dogma, angels, and the big picture. Is God a woman? You’ll find out! A movie that keeps your attention, if you are able to overlook the language and violence noted above. Thumbs up for content and acting, but thumbs down for cursing!
