The impact of the weather on high school sitework will force Rappahannock County schools to open one week late this year, according to Superintendent Dr. David Gangel. The revised public schools calendar shifts most activities back one week, with the first day of school now scheduled for Sept. 5 and the last day of school June 13. Pre-school start date events have been rescheduled too: new teacher workdays are scheduled for Aug. 21 through Aug. 25, inservice is scheduled for Aug. 28, returning teacher workdays run from Aug. 29 through Sept. 1, and "Student and Parent Meet the Teachers" day will be held Aug. 31 from 2 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
Dr. Gangel explained, at Tuesday s School Board meeting, that the unusually persistent rain this summer has caused significant delay in the completion of the sitework, most notably the new bus lanes and the new parking lot. Paving is now scheduled for Aug. 16, weather permitting, and it is possible he said, that the work will be completed in time for the new schools opening date of Sept. 5. If the inclement weather continues the sitework may not be completed in time, and one option is to reroute the buses, temporarily, to the rear of the high school.
The high school addition work itself and the electrical upgrade work, Dr. Gangel reported, are in much better shape. The electrical upgrade work, that will provide adequate power and additional circuits for things like air conditioning, was scheduled for completion by Aug. 14 and the majority of that work "will come in on time.!’ The work on the building, that was also scheduled for completion by Aug. 14, should be finished by Aug. 16, and turnover of the facility on that date would allow adequate time for cleanup and classroom setup.
Lagoon repairs
The lagoon repairs at the elementary school are also problematic. The emergency situation declared by the ! School Board has permitted the schools administration to expedite the repair process but, other than engineering work, no substantive repairs have yet been completed.
