James W. Fletcher of Sperryville was elected vice- president of Piedmont District, at a meeting of the Virginia Bar Association held at White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. on Aug. 4 and 5. There were four other vice-presidents elected from the state of Virginia to represent various districts. Mr. and Mrs. A.M. Hickman also attended the Virginia Bar Association meeting. A four-month-old calf, owned by Roadcap Atkins Jr., weighing 515 pounds was sold on the livestock market at Front Royal recently bring $140.33. This calf, raised by young Atkins, was sired by a pure-bred Hereford bull, out of a part Jersey and Hereford cow. Monday, around 4 o'clock, the spray airplane, piloted by Cecil Carthy, made a forced landing in the field of Bossy Williams while the cornfields of Flip Chaddell at the Black Rock Valley near Chester Gap were being sprayed. The spraying apparatus was damaged but the pilot escaped unhurt. Cornfields in the vicinity of Flint Hill and Washington were sprayed this week by the airplane spray method with DDT to kill the Japanese beetles in the com. It is estimated that 300 to 400 acres of com were sprayed by this method.
Fifty-six 4-H club members from the county are going to Powell's Fort Valley Camp to spent the week of Aug. 14.
