Note: The Rappahannock Professional Educators Growth Endowment was established in early 2000 with initial impetus from Rosa Crocker and John Tole. The purpose of RPEGE is to recognize the high regard our community has for the commitment of our public school educators to our children. The RPEGE will provide opportunities for exceptional professional growth for school staff. Several members of the community were solicited for initial support with additional seed money coming from the school system. The experiences described in this article were made possible, in part, by this fledgling endowment. Based on this initial success, our hope is to greatly expand the financial base of the endowment, with community support, to at least $10,000 in the near future. When this dollar plateau is reached our aim is to place the RPEGE under the administrative umbrella of Headwaters.
Each spring, Virginia Tech's Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies convenes The Educational Leadership and Ethics Conference at Oxford University, England. With sponsorship of the RPEGE and the school system, two teachers, Deborah Flinchum and Ron Vickers, attended this year's conferenrfe. In past years Rosa Crocker and John Tole had attended under private sponsorship.
About 35 Americans, most from Virginia, travel to Oxford, reside in student rooms at Exeter College, attend seminars with British and other foreign educators, make small-group visits to British schools and take advantage of a host of other activities. Because of its 10year history the conference is very effectively run.
