The 19th-century team of William Schwenck Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan were the kings of the London stage in .1884. As Gilbert and Sullivan, they collaborated on fourteen comic operas over a quarter century, including "The Pirates of Penzance’’ and "H.M.S. Pinafore." But when their newest work "Princess Ida" opens, critics call it predictable.
Composer Sullivan (Allan Corduner) agrees, telling writer Gilbert (Jim Broadbent) that his stories have begun to follow a set formula. Furthermore, Sullivan informs Gilbert that he is considering leaving the partnership to write more serious music.
Gilbert is despondent.
