The rezoning request is for 2,700 homes, including 1,980 homes for “activq adults,” ages 55 or older: about 6,0QO people in all. It calls for 1,000,000 square feet of light industrial development on 100 acres along Route 211. It asks for 500,000 square feet of commercial development on 60 acres at the corner of Routes 211 and 229, to include a hotel and conference center. Route 229 i$ to be moved, to cross to Route 622, Old Bridge Road. The space between the current and new Route 229 is to become a commuter parking facility.
These figures are hard to grasp* What is comparable to the 160 acres of commercial/light industrial space and its 1.5 million square feet? Many have seen the commercial/industrial effort at Gainesville on Route 29 near 1-66. On • the south side of Route 29, lies the. Virginia Gateway Center, now covering 217 acres. Clevenger’s Corner’s commer-: cial/light industrial area would be three-; quarters the size of the Virginia Gateway Center. 1.5 million square feet*? Wal-Mart in Culpeper covers 201,000 square feet. Seven Wal-Marts would fit in at Clevenger’s Corner.
