Birds study their resources in advance. That is what they are doing in the fall, noting available food sources. It is good to be included in their inventories. If the birds discover that your yard is worth visiting, they will remember and when hungry they will show up.
On the other hand, if you wait until bad weather arrives, the birds may not ever realize what you have to offer. Under the stress of freezing weather they cannot afford the luxury of exploring. Birds must go where they know there will be food. They might not discover your feeder all winter, even though it is adequately supplied.
Start offering food now. to be consistent about feeding the birds, but don’t worry if you have to be away from your home for a while in winter. Birds are used to having a food source disappear. That is when their fall observations serve them. They know where they can go, and they will not starve because of your lapse.
Although, if you leave your feeders bare while you are at home, you will not see as many birds visiting your yard. They will retreat to your neighbors’ yards, and you will miss their frequent visits.
