Warrenton physician Eric Maybach has practiced medicine in our area for over 30 years, and while his Rappahannock patients know him as their doctor, few may be aware of his passion for old cars — especially the rare old marque that is his namesake.
Maybach automobiles will be produced in Germany again, after a hiatus of over 60 years, and Dr. Maybach received a special invitation to the unveiling of the 2003 Maybach automobile line in Germany.
DiamlerChrysler’s introduction of the new line of Maybach automobiles was the centerpiece of the annual meeting of the international Maybach Club, held Sept. 27-29 at GarmischPartenkirchen in southern Germany.
The 2003 Maybach Model 57 and 62 sedans - with list prices starting at $310,000 - are the first of a number of all-new, “super-luxury” automobiles.
Although owned by DaimlerChrysler — the company that builds Mercedes-Benz automobiles — the new Maybachs will be built on their own production line.
By making the public debut at the annual meeting of the Maybach Club, DaimlerChrysler was making a very real connection with the original Maybach automobiles, built by Wilhelm Maybach (1846-1929) and his son Karl (1879-1960) in Stuttgart from 1922-1940.
Dr. Maybach has owned a 1939 Maybach Model SW 38 cabriolet since 1992, and is currently restoring his car in a garage in Warrenton. He has learned through the club registry that he is currently “The only member of the Maybach family who owns a Maybach.”
Gathering at the castle
Hermann Sieger, president of the Maybach Club, personally invited Dr. Maybach to the annual meeting, which was held at the Schloss Elmau, an ancient Bavarian castle that is now used as a resort hotel.
Since the club wanted as many Maybach descendants to attend, the invitation was also extended to Dr. Maybach’s his brother Christopher and his wife, Chan tel, and his sister, Susan Maybach, all residents of Colorado; and his son, Peter, of Warrenton.
It was a very enjoyable trip, marked by three days of meetings and discussions at the picturesque castle
