Wilhelm Maybach and son Karl then began building Maybach engines, which powered aircraft and the lighterthan-air dirigibles built by Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin.
After World War I, Wilhelm and Karl began building Maybach luxury automobiles, of which a total of 2,000 were produced from 1922-40.
With the outbreak of World War II, the Maybach plant was converted from building cars to building engines for German Panzer tanks.
After the defeat of Germany and the subsequent division of the country into West and East, the Maybach Company reinvented itself, this time manufacturing automotive products and later jet aircraft engines under the name Motor Turbine United (MTU). In 1960, MTU was sold to Daimler-Benz.
