In contrast to its neighbors, Rappahannock County has the lowest population growth in the past 30 years.
Both Fauquier and Warren counties more than doubled their population from 1970 to 2000. Culpeper County was close behind, with an 88 percent increase.
Madison, Page and Rappahannock counties showed much more modest changes. Rappahannock County had the lowest increase—34.3 percent during the 30-year period.
The population of Rappahannock County declined from 1900 to 1970 (8,843 versus 5,199 persons) but increased from 1970 to 2000 (5,199 versus 6,983 persons). The neighboring counties experienced similar trends over the past century.
