environmental catastropne and also as a personal loss, remembering the many happy hours I spent as a child observing and pursuing these fascinating creatures. What would the world be like without them, and can we survive in it?
It’s late at night as I finish this column. My landlady is on foal patrol, waiting for the first of five foals expected to be bom this spring on the farm. I’ve offered to bring over a pot of coffee, and on the walk over on this unseasonably warm spring night, I hear tree frogs joining the songs of the chorus frogs and spring peepers, who were the first of the frogs to herald spring. I can only hope they’ll survive to herald many more.
