The population changes in Fauquier and Warren counties may be due, in part, to an influx of people who were able to commute to work in urban and suburban Washington, D.C.
These two counties and Culpeper County have also established an economic base associated with employment and urbanization that can support a larger population.
Madison, Page and Rappahannock counties, in contrast, continue to remain predominantly rural. Indeed, only 183 people live in the historic Town of Washington, representing only 2.6 percent of the total Rappahannock County population (the town, of course, is not considered to be an urban area).
