Leafless, filigree trees are growing near a fence that divides two pastures.
A misty hill beyond is part of a composition in four sections that run along diagonal lines —the sky, the hill and the divided fields. The delicately painted trees give the whole scene a fragile quality. Not surprisingly, this picture has already been sold, as have several others.
“Water Meadow” is composed of a light buff-colored field that almost looks like a fluffy sheepskin. In the foreground it is edged with a small, bright blue stream. The back of the meadow is bordered by lavender-red trees, above which is a steel blue mountain and a light blue, cloudless sky. This picture is characteristic of some others in that there is generally a simplification of elements of Manookian’s subjects which results in serenity.
While focusing on water, trees, fields and mountains, numerous signs of human works—a bucket of stones, a few houses here and there, a church, several barns and even a monastery—punctuate or even dominate Manookian’s world of nature.
