Tippett said the completion of the project won’t be until 2005, but when they remove a big section next year there definitely will be a party at FOR.
The FOR has been working hard to bring the dam down and recently enlisted the help of Sen. John Warner. It is now a done deal.
“It is like the Berlin Wall coming down for us,” Tippett said. “We have been working on it since 1985. We can't wait."
In addition to the structure, about a 200-acre onefoot-deep section before the dam will have to be dredged.
FOR programs
Many of the programs involving FOR are familyfriendly and special discounts are offered for four or more persons in a party. Virginia Outdoor Center donates all the canoe equipment.
In May, two programs are designed with birders in mind. On May 3, Dr. Joella Killian is leading an interpretive hike along the river and up the Rappahannock Canal path.
And on May 11, Bill Micks will be taking birders on an exclusive canoe float to a Great Blue Heron rookery.
