returned overnight, the family started making flyers to put at post offices, churches and gas stations. They also contacted all the surrounding animal shelters.
They were even allowed by VDOT, although the state law prohibits it, to place a four by eight foot sign within 25 feet of the right-of-way. The sign read that “Pete” their chocolate lab was missing, $1,000 reward, and to call 9373445.
They had placed ads in several newspapers: Washington Post, Rappahannock News, Fauquier Times Democrat, Fauquier Citizen, and the Culpeper Star Exponent.
They also placed about 400 flyers in mailboxes.
Three or four days later Pete was spotted in Amissville and within the next week to 10 days they said they probably had between 30 to 40 different phone calls saying they had seen their dog but they never got him.
“We had people in Amissville who had seen him and he was in back yards, he attended a couple of barbecues,” said Bill Schmieder.
There have also been sightings as far away as Front Royal and as far south as Catalpa near Culpeper.
