When a newcomer to this
area has been sufficiently seduced by it to approach a realtor, he/she usually indicates a preference for “a small piece of land with an old house in need of work, on a stream with stone-walls about and of course wonderful views.”
At this point I ask about what aspect of the county they have found most appealing and invariably it is its openness, its vistas and its relative peacefulness.
I seize this opportunity then to explain our zoning, the way in which it operates to continue to provide the qualities which they have described and the need for vigilance in our planning. Interestingly enough most “new lookers” do not want to see a neighbor close at handwould in fact “prefer privacy”.
