run and in looking into the situation, I came up with the conclusion, maybe I have something to offer . the community," said Butler.

“I feel I have the experience that would be of benefit to the people in the county,” said Butler, who started his lawenforcement career in 1967 as a street officer with the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D. C.

Butler, who lives in Boston, said he had been approached also in the last election to run.

“I declined because I thought the current sheriff was a good man and could get the job done,” Butler said.

Butler feels now that he could improve the sheriff’s office so that it has “a better working relationship with the fire department and the state police and a better working relationship with the citizens."

In an interview, Butler said he was “concerned about the morale factor in the sheriffs department. I have been told by many people that the morale factor in the department has deteriorated substantially. . .over the last four years.”
