Mt. Salem’s church pews came home on Sunday. After months of work by the Restoration Association and Commonwealth Attorney George Davis, the 154-year-old benches were returned from a church near Virginia Beach where they had been “on loan” for almost eight years. Mt. Salem is the oldest church structure in the county and these original pews were built around 1824.
“The volume of work coming into this agency is staggering,” announced Welfare Director Elizabeth Buntin at last Friday’s meeting of the Rappahannock Welfare board. “I’m getting more and more depressed about falling behind. . . .1 can’t even keep up with the mail.” She attributed most of her department’s problems to the increasing number of programs developed by various agencies that “live in little white towers down there in Richmond.”
