Sooner or later, he said they are going to have to give up. He said he was making new flyers since VDOT had asked him to take his four by eight signs down. He said the family was very pleased that VDOT let them keep the signs up as long as they did, but as soon as the signs came down he said they started receiving calls from people congratulating them on finding Pete, but they hadn’t.
“I don’t want us to be singled out about being so distraught over it (Pete’s disappearing),” said Karen Schmieder. “I know people lose their pets every single day and now I know how hard it is.”
Just after a month passed, the Schmieder family contacted the kennel where they purchased Pete and Willie and told them their story. They got Toby, an 11-month old yellow lab, who has become a new companion for Willie.
As Bill Schmieder watches his two young dogs play he says he still has hope that Pete will return home.
“I am an eternal optimist,” said Bill Schmieder. “I believe that unless Pete is dead, sooner or later we will find him. It’s just a matter of finding the right person who happened to pick him up.”
