Students from eight local middle schools gathered at Wakefield Country Day School in Flint Hill on Sunday, May 18, to demonstrate their reading and comprehension skills in a hotly contested “Battle of the Books" competition.
Over the course of 10 rounds, each team of Five was, in turn, asked a book-related question drawn at random bv Wakefield Headmaster Michael Vargo, who acted as Master of Ceremonies for the event.
The team members had 30 seconds to confer with each other, after w'hich the captain went to the microphone and announced his or her team’s answer to questions that each began with the phrase, “In which book would you find. . . .”
At the conclusion of the 10th round, Wakefield Country Day School’s team had won First Place, with a nine-point score. The Wakefield team consisted of Nicole Espinola, Joy Heddleston, Cecelia Marschner, Katherine Russo, captain Keenan Sherwood, and alternates Karen Ermert and Andrew Schaus,
There was a tie for Second Place, with three teams having earned seven points at the close of round ten: Culpeper Middle School (consisting of Amanda Farkas, Christine Farkas, captain Andrew Glass, Jessica Klein, Emily Madison, and alternates Mandy Black and Karla Johnson); Rappahannock County Middle School (comprised of Caroline Massie, Brian Ross, captain Sarah Switzer, Chase Tupper, Megan Wheatley, and alternates Will Boelte and Alana Cloud); and Taylor Middle School (consisting of Casey Bilger, captain Dana
