The most popular way to become an American citizen is to be bom in the United States, but there is also a process called naturalization in which aliens can become Americans. It is a ceremony in which aliens give up citizenship in their country and promise to support and defend the Constitution of the United States.
On February, 29, 1952, President Harry S. Truman signed a bill making Sept. 17 Citizenship Day. Citizenship to me means being «a loyal citizen every day. Qualities that a good citizen should have are being helpful, trustworthy, responsible, resourceful, considerate and honest.
A good citizen is one who attends county meetings such as school budget hearings and being involved in county activities and events. Being a good citizen means being active and serving your community by volunteering.
Both of my paternal grandparents have been active participants in Rappahannock County for many years. My grandmother served as chairman of the School Board for 23 years.
Despite busy jobs as a farmer mid a speech pathologist, both my mother and father are busy volunteers in 4-H, school and various other activities in Rappahannock County. Volunteering involves a lot of dedication and giving back to your community.
