The gesture came alter the supervisors had paged through several line items in the fiscal 2005 Budget, asking questions, and continuing on, until they reached “Public Safety.”
Sheriff Sherertz had asked the board at its last meeting for a salary supplement for his deputies of $6,146, plus Law Enforcement Office Retirement Supplemental (LEOS) to bring Rappahannock in line with sheriffs’ departments in neighboring counties. The LEOS would serve to provide 76 percent of a deputy’s salary during retirement after 25 years of service.
Standing in starched uniform, Sherertz said, “I just want to thank you for this opportunity to speak to you. The (salary) supplement I asked for is very, very important....
“I’d like for the board to consider as much as they can give.”
As much as $4,000, he said, “would be an excellent show of support.”
The mood in the room seemed to change when the sheriff gave up his supplement. Indeed, the supplemental for the sheriff had stuck in the craw of some of the supervisors who felt that the sheriff had chosen his job and signed on for four years as a Commonwealth Officer.
“This was a very good gesture that backed up his previous comments that he was asking for the supplement to support his deputies,” said County Administrator John McCarthy. “The board, I think, recognized the gesture as important.”
