There are 12 Shell stations running from Rappahannock County via Route 211, Route 29 and Route 50 to Washington, D.C. Where local lighting ordinances are in place, red stripes are in use. About two or three of them have not been converted yet and still have the “industrial gray” canopies, i.e., one in Warrenton and one in New Baltimore.
The Shell station on Route 211 is a good example of the “grandfathered-in” clause of the proposed lighting ordinance. The current lighting is allowable. If the Board of Supervisors approves the ordinance, a Sheetz could not come in and easily outshine Shell - no contest.
In the fall of 1999, Sheetz proposed a gas station along Route 29 south of the Tbwn of Madison in Madison County. Madison County had no lighting ordinance. Sheetz won approval “by right.” Even though citizens objected vehemently to Sheetz’ excessive lighting, and even showed alternate building designs used by Sheetz elsewhere, they lost.
