Said McCarthy, “All of our neighbors offer LEOS, except Clarke County. The sheriff showed it was a cost of doing business.”
After the meeting, Sherertz was almost jubilant. He told supervisor Lee in the hallway, “God bless you.”
Outside the courthouse, he said, “I am thrilled and grateful to the board for funding the retirement benefit and the salary supplement. This gives me a tool to stop the revolving door on hiring and retaining deputies.”
As a further and last measure at the meeting, the board approved the fiscal 2005 county budget of $16,990,877, which is up from $15,759,950 in fiscal 2004. That also includes the school budget of $6,469,567.
And while the 2005 budget represents a jump in total terms, it reflects non-recurring costs, like the money set aside to purchase land next to the courthouse and other expenses totalling nearly $500,000.
“If you take out the one-time spending items,” said McCarthy, “it’s a standard increase.”
