Excessive lighting, coupled with bright colors, has been found to be a powerful marketing tool. The sides of canopies are the new battleground. Some stations are now even illuminating the entire sides of their buildings. The overall intent is to increase market share, to drive competitors out of business.

Sheetz restaurants

Sheetz is now downplaying the gasoline business and becoming a Convenience Restaurant, moving fueling stations to the side. Stores are to expand to 10,000 square feet, double their average current size. A “model” Convenience Restaurant opened June 10 in Altoona, Pa., where Sheetz is headquartered. It has restaurant seating for 62 inside and 46 outside.

Sheetz would like to change its store at Opal in Fauquier County, at the intersection of routes 17 and 29, to a Convenience Restaurant seating 84 people inside, and with an eating area outside. The design of its building shows it
