Bridge gets decked out

Driving 30 minutes on a winding, gravel mountain road with no houses in sight, the last thing anyone expects to find is a bridge decorated for the holidays.
But that is what’s there on Turkey Ridge Road in Castleton where one family has been decorating a bridge instead of their house for the past five Christmases.
All Rebel Hafher, now 8, wanted was what most children want: a house decorated with lights.
However, Rebel’s father, David Hafner said that no one could see the house from the road since they lived so far back in the mountain.
So, he came up with am idea of decorating the Black Water Creek bridge on Turkey Ridge Road where everyone that crosses the bridge can see the decorations.
For the first three years, only David Hafher and his wife, Wendy, and Rebel did all the decorating. Then they asked their neighbors, Alan and Shirley Miller to help out.
Both families thought it was a good thing to do and wanted to make it a holiday tradition.
Mrs. Miller thinks that it does add to the Christmas spirit and when their neighbors cross the bridge they will ei\joy it. Both families agree that next year they will ask more people on Turkey Ridge Road to get involved with the tradition.
If the bridge is not decorated by the first week in December, they usually are asked if they are going to decorate it for Christmas.
“When the neighbors go across the bridge I hope they will enjoy it and have smiles on their faces,” said Mrs. Miller.
