“We did put some additional funds in the budget for fuel costs, but it’s already higher than we anticipated,” said Superintendent of schools Dr. Bob Chappell.,
“Instead of using three buses for field trips, we’re going to use two,” said Roger Mello, principal of Rappahannock County High School, giving an example of how the school system could offset the rising prices. The price of oil is also going to affect the school system’s heating oil purchases, but Rappahannock has already managed to avoid part of the crunch.
“We had already filled up the heating tanks, it should take us halfway through the season” noted Chappell. “There’s absolutely no question that it’s a concern.”
Esther Settle was operating her gas station during the energy crisis of the 1970’s, and she seemed unfazed by the current situation.
“We survived that, we’ll survive this,” she said.
