According to Carl Lovem of the Amissville Fire and Rescue squad, three tornadoes were spotted around Amissville Tuesday evening shortly after 7:30 in the evening the night of Tuesday, August 30. Fortunately no one was hurt and no houses damaged. Trees and outbuildings took some abuse on however.
One big one touched down less than two hundred yards from the home of Chuck and Carolyn Lauer, of Battle Mountain Road. Carolyn Lauer was home alone at the time. Around 7 pm, Lauer says, there was pouring rain and the power went out. Then “around 7:25 a friend called to see if I was alright, because she had heard there was a tornado warning”, and a little after 7:30, the tornado struck.
