South America is still home to many marsupials, especially opossums (didelphids), including mouse-like murine opossums, woolly opossums with luxurious fur, and even aquatic opossums with webbed feet.
We’ll admit our furry friends may not be everyone’s favorite mammal. Most people encounter opossums just before or after they become road kill. And opossums won’t win beauty contests—Captain John Smith described them as having “a head like a swine and a tail like a rat.” Still, they represent an ancient group of mammals that deserves its share of natural history fame.
