Fall sports at Wakefield Country Day School have begun and students are ready to participate. Although the school’s small size means that participation is sometimes a problem, WCDS will be fielding teams this year in Girl’s Volleyball,Boy’s Soccer, and Cross Country.
The school is starting their first year in the Delaney Athletic Conference, playing against local private schools like Highland School in Warrenton and Randolph-Macon Military Academy in Front Royal. Many of the schools in the Delaney Athletic Conference are far larger than Wakefield County Day, so it should prove to be a challenging year for the Owls.
Finding net
The biggest team at Wakefield this fall, and the biggest turnout for a sport ever at WCDS, is the varsity boys soccer team. Led by head coach Gali Sanchez, the Owls have already been practicing for two weeks. Sanchez won coach of the year last spring for his work with the WCDS Girl’s soccer team, and is trying to generate the same enthusiasm on the men’s side of things. The team has 28 players this season, just three of which are seniors, meaning that this is a good year for WCDS to gain valuable experience as a team and carry it through to next year, when they’ll have a large returning class of players.
“Our goal is to come together as a team and put in place everything we’ll need for next year,” said Sanchez.
The team is experimenting with an interesting practice regimen this year, including a soccer-based multi-station obstacle course that included kicking soccer balls into a folding chair, passing the ball through a blue vinyl tube, and bouncing balls off the side of the WCDS gym.
