can marsupials, but this wasn’t always the case. During the late Mesozoic (80 million years ago) when marsupials first appeared on the scene, they were all North American. The oldest fossil forms are actually quite opossum-like in appearance, one of the reasons opossums are sometimes referred to as “living fossils.”
From North America, marsupials migrated to South America, Europe and Asia. Those in North America, Europe and Asia eventually became extinct, but South American marsupials remained diverse.
