Hudgens, who is beginning his first year at WCDS.

Serve it up

The WCDS girl’s volleyball team is headed by Susan Zylonis who also coached at Rappahannock Country High School. She is assisted by; Jessica Patten, who is new to - WCDS and will coach the JV girl’s volleyball squad. Patten is a recent high school graduate and is attending Lord Fairfax when she isn’t teaching Owls how to serve. “I enjoy it a lot,” she said of her first coaching experiences at WCDS. The volleyball team practices in the WCDS gym, and when they aren’t knocking balls at one another they are taking turns as human wheelbarrows, one girl walking on her hands while another holds her ankles in the air.

Pace yourself

The cross county team is coached by Mike Kenney, who doubles as WCDS’ athleticdirector. Coach Kenney manages to do both these jobs while still running his own business, the Kenney Sport shop, in Front Royal.

“I’m still learning a lot about Cross country,” admitted Kenney, who despite his inexperience in that sport, is coaching a passionate team this year. This passion for cross country is epitomized in Kevin Reidel, who is a junior this year. During the off-season, Reidel took it upon himself to create trails for his team, scattering and spreading wood-, chips through the woods to kill; the underbrush and make arunning path.

“He is just a great young man. He’s done a lot for this school, said Kenney.
