Growing up in Rappahannock County was a wonderful thing for me, but it was different from what rfty urban brethren experienced. Oneway to demonstrate this is to look at what I thought of as “special days,” i.e., of all the days of the years, which ones did I look forward to the most.

For some of us, one of those days would be the last day of school. Ah, freedom! Just as surely, for others, who may have been somewhat more isolated or scholarly, it was probably the first day of school.

Certainly, there was Christmas, and, to those in my family, your birthday. It wasn’t for presents, for, quite frankly, when I was a kid, there weren’t many birthday presents. But, our Mother gave us permission to pick what we wanted for supper that night.
