Since he routinely spends time on his bike, Hayes doesn’t do any special prep for the RoughRide, but he suggests that beginners do at least a few rides of comparable distance before Sept. 17.
But never fear — a “sag wagon” will be cruising the routes to lend a helping hand and, if needed, a ride back.
Who it helps
The RoughRide is in its ninth year, and Marino estimated that it has raised more than $150,000 in that time.
“Most of the money raised by the Free Clinic goes directly to purchase medications for our patients,” Marino explained. “Patient services are provided by volunteer doctors, nurses, dentists, and administrators, and we have very little overhead since we pay no rent, utilities, and so forth.
“We use the money we raise at the Rough Ride to cover ongoing expenses, like supplies for our diabetic patients, medications, basic medical supplies like syringes, stethoscopes, and the like.”
