For the past week, we have
sat in the comfort of our home, here in one of the most beautiful, safe and scenic areas of America, watching on TV with utter disbelief, horror and shame at the unfolding tragedy wrought by nature and man in New Orleans and across vast stretches of the Gulf Coast.
It is a shock to see scenes of misery, suffering and death that we associate with the Third World occurring here in our own rich, powerful country. It is unacceptable to simply watch and do nothing but complain about the inadequacies of the relief efforts. Here in a land blessed by God and so far unspoiled by man, we think we have a special duty to offer whatever help we can to our fellow citizens who have been dealt this devastating hand.
