much more than two years. If threatened they look ferocious, baring their 50 tiny teeth and hissing furiously. But they are not very good at defending themselves. As a last resort they are known to “play possum” and flop into a coma-like state that convinces some predators that they are dead. But this doesn’t work with cars, which kill millions of opossums every year.
As marsupials, female opossums have an abdominal pouch where embryos are sheltered during a lengthy period of nursing. Opossums breed from December through mid-summer. Females produce babies during their first year and can have more than one litter a year. They give birth only 13 days after mating! The tiny babies (actually barely-formed embryos about the size of navy beans) crawl out of the birth canal to the mother’s pouch, where each attaches to a teat. If there are more embryos than teats (13 or less usually), the extra embryos starve. After about 70-80 days, babies (usually about 6 or 7) crawl out of the pouch and ding
