The Celts believed mistletoe to have mystical healing powers and brought plants inside in the winter to insure the coming of a new spring. And in ancient Gaul whiteclad druids harvested mistletoe during winter solstices when it was thought to possess its greatest potency as a cure-all and an antidote to poisons.
The practice of kissing under the mistletoe apparently derives from Norse mythology. Balder, the god of Peace, was slain with an arrow made of mistletoe.
Distraught, Baldur’s mother Frigga appealed to the other gods and goddesses to restore him to life. This they did, and in her joy Figga kissed everyone who passed beneath the mistletoe, decreeing that the humble plant should thereafter be a symbol of love and forgiveness.
So this bizarre plant represents an ancient and worthy ' symbol of the feelings all of us want to celebrate during the holidays. Peace, love, forgiveness, rebirth, and healing.
