port for local government backing (and funding) of the project. The project actually passed the referendum in Culpeper but there was a glitch. Opponents accused the railroad backers of (falsely) stating that electricity for the railroad would also be used for lighting of businesses. Court proceedings dragged on for several years. Finally Culpeper supervisors voted $50,000 for the railroad, but only after its completion. The Rappahannock Citizens Railroad Committee continued its efforts to elicit public support through 1904.
But all of this came to naught. Macadamized (hardsurface) roads and emerging mass-produced autos were about to revolutionize personal and business transportation and whatever chances there may have been for the ribbon of steel to reach Rappahannock.
A final effort was made around 1911 to create a trolley line from Sperryville to Culpeper.
