It is a documented fact that athletics are an important part of any student’s high school experience either as an athlete or as a spectator. Some students excel in the classroom and some excel on the playing field in whichever sport that may be. I have seen many students who struggled in elementary school go on to the high school, become involved in the sports program, and gain a confidence that spilled over into the classroom which helped to improve their academics. This year our governor has required that all schools have in place by the school year 2006, a healthy kids program to help fight the increase of obesity in our children that is becoming an epidemic.
