Poinsettias grouped with Norfolk Island Pines or Dwarf Scheffleras look beautiful and festive. It is possible to keep poinsettias after the holiday season and have them for future enjoyment. Reflowering takes a lot of work on the owner’s part. If you are interested in trying this, give the extension office a call. People have tried to use poinsettias as cut flowers in arrangements, but they have found that they tend to wilt prematurely and don’t keep well.
Poisonous?
Although there have been many stories floating around through history on the toxic properties of poinsettia, research conducted by universities has not been able to back up the stories. Although many plants in the Euphorbia family are poisonous, poinsettias may only cause mild skin irritations after touching the milky sap. It is important to point out that just because poinsettias are not considered poisonous, that does not mean they are considered an edible plant! Researchers have also studied the effects of the plant on cats and dogs and have come up with similar results.
