Going from church to church like this and having several churches with one minister is one of the historically distinctive characteristics of the Methodist Church. The concept of the Charge, with one minister at several churches, dates back to early in the history of the Methodist Church in America. Originally Methodism was simply a branch of especially devout Anglicans, an approach rather than a sect or denomination.. The spiritual founder of Methodism in the United States, John Wesley, remained Anglican himself his entire life. But the American Revolution created a split in the former colonies. The small number of ordained ministers that came over with Wesley were not recognized by the Anglican political hierarchy as legitimate, and hence a new sect was bom.
