Tracking the past
At least four attempts were made, starting in 1872, to bring the iron horse to our doorsteps. The largest effort occurred in 1898-1904 with an attempt to engage the interest of the community in the Fredericksburg and Rappahannock Railroad. The Rappahannock portion of the project proposed an electrified line from Culpeper to Sperryville with power to be generated at a plant located on the Hazel River. A large group of citizens from Culpeper and Rappahannock Counties endeavored to sell subscriptions (stock) in the enterprise. The Citizens Railroad Committee of Rappahannock with over 30 prominent citizens, lobbied hard with county residents and local government.
